Keyword density is an indicator of the number of times the selected keyword appears in the web page. But mind you, keywords shouldn't be over used, but should be just sufficient enough to appear at important places.
If you repeat your keywords with every other word on every line, then your site will probably be rejected as an artificial site or spam site.
Keyword density is always expressed as a percentage of the total word content on a given web page.
Suppose you have 100 words on your webpage (not including HMTL code used for writing the web page), and you use a certain keyword for five times in the content. The keyword density on that page is got by simply dividing the total number of keywords, by the total number of words that appear on your web page. So here it is 5 divided by 100 = .05. Because keyword density is a percentage of the total word count on the page, multiply the above by 100, that is 0.05 x 100 = 5%

The accepted standard for a keyword density is between 3% and 5%, to get recognized by the search engines and you should never exceed it.
Remember, that this rule applies to every page on your site. It also applies to not just to one keyword but also a set of keywords that relates to a different product or service. The keyword density should always be between 3% and 5%.
Simple steps to check the density: Copy and paste the content from an individual web page into a word-processing software program like Word or Word Perfect. Go to the ‘Edit' menu and click ‘Select All'. Now go to the ‘Tools' menu and select ‘Word Count'. Write down the total number of words in the page. Now select the ‘Find' function on the ‘Edit' menu. Go to the ‘Replace' tab and type in the keyword you want to find. ‘Replace' that word with the same word, so you don't change the text. When you complete the replace function, the system will provide a count of the words you replaced. That gives the number of times you have used the keyword in that page.
Using the total word count for the page and the total number of keywords you can now calculate the keyword density.

When Googlebot begins to the crawl the internet it starts with a list of URL’s from previous sessions, and augmented with Sitemap data provided by webmasters. When Googlebot lands on a page it takes the links from that page and adds them to its list of pages to crawl. New websites or updates to new ones are noted and updated on the Google index.
The good thing to note here is that you cannot pay Google to crawl a site more frequently and is not part of their revenue generating services.
Googlebot processes each of the pages it crawls in order to compile a massive index of all the words it sees and their location on each page. In addition, Google processes information included in key content tags and attributes, such as Title tags and ALT attributes. Googlebot can process many, but not all, content types. For example, we cannot process the content of some rich media files, dynamic pages or iframes.

2. Click on Statistics on the left hand side panel.

3. Click on Index Stats.

From here it will show you a screen shot of the last time Googlebot crawled your webpage.

What you want to do from here is save that page.

1. Go to 'File' at the top right hand corner of your browser.

2. Go down to 'Save As' and save it as index.html or index1 whatever you choose.

3. Use your FTP program to transfer it over to your Hosting Folder.

4. Using your Website Design Tool modify it from what Google has Cached then save back over your index.html file.

By this point you should your original Website which was lost should now be restored. At this point you may want to make a back up of it.

Firstly, let me explain: there are two kinds of subdomains:

1. Second Tier subdomains: These are linked to, and link directly to, the main domain. 2. Orphan Subdomains: These have no links to or from the main domain.

With all of our hosting packages we offer unlimited subdomains to our clients. Yet - almost nobody uses them. I will try to point out using the advantages of both types in this article, giving one example of how to use each.

Second Tier Subdomains

You have a website. You spend alot of time building it, refining it, tweaking it into oblivion to get the search engine results you are looking for, yet you don't get visitors. Let me go back a minute to show how competite the word camping is. If I go to Google and enter camping I find that there are 230 million other websites targeting the same phrase. Once you start getting traffic from search engines with your main keywords you may then start targeting more competitive phrases.
Using the online tools I've mentioned above it's easy to find a few less competitive phrases that can be a good base for our on page website optimization related to camping.

It is also important to repeat the same research process by going to Google and seeing how competitve your chosen keywords are. I will start with the keyword and take a few minutes to analyse the number 1 website for that keyword on Google.
It is also critical to analyze what the page rank is of the number 1 website for your chosen keyword. Page rank is used by Google in ranking websites and generally the more links that you have pointing back to your website by other websites the higher your Google page rank will be. Download the Google toolbar for free to find out what your page rank is and the page rank of other websites at http://toolbar.google.com.
Now we need to do a little spying on the website that has number one for that keyword. We do that by looking at the HTML code or source code of their website. Go to that website url and click on View and then Source. That website's HTML code will appear in a notepad file. That file contains what the web page will look like when "read" by search engine robots. This trick will show you exactly what on page optimization is being used to rank so highly in the search engines.
Search engine optimization involve both on page and off page optimization. In this article I am focusing on on page optimization. I will deal with off page optimization in more detail at another time.
Now when we view the source code we want to look at the header tags for a start. Do you see h1 at the very top of the source code. If not then that's a bonus. If you do then it is important to make a note of what words they are using for their heading 1.
The next thing you need to look at is title. What is the title that they are using. This should appear immediately below the head tag. It is also important to make a note of the keywords that they are using in the title. The less words you actually have in your title the better. It is also critical that your main keyword or keyword phrase is in your title too.
Now take a moment to check out the keywords that they are using in the meta tags and make a note of them. Use the same keywords they use, check out the keywords that they have used in their description. Make a note of their description. A good guide for you is to repeat your main keyword or keyword phrase two or three times in the description but obviously in a way that makes sense.

Look at their webpage to find out if they have bolded, underlined or italicised their main keywords. If they have then you know that you need to do the same thing to achieve high rankings for your chosen keyword. If you have trouble looking for these codes in the notepad file simply look at the webpage itself.
One more thing to look out for in their source code is wehther they have optimized their images for the chosen keyword. For example, some website images will simply have bigebook.jpg as the name of their image but have not used alternative text. An example of an alternative text would be home made dog treat ecover.

I have seen a lot of people ask for instructions on how to setup and configure sh404SEF for their Joomla website. So here it is, my step by step guide to configure Joomla for SEO.
The article assumes that you already have a Joomla website setup and are familiar with how to install and configure extensions in Joomla.
sh404SEF is a must have component for any Joomla site, it is essential to create Search Engine Friendly urls which are very important for anyone wanting to get into Google,Yahoo or any of the other similar search engines.

Installation

Installation of this component is pretty straight forward, go to the install/uninstall page and install the sh404SEF package.

Joomla native SEO Configuration

Before configuring sh404SEF, the native SEO settings of Joomla need to be turned on. You can do this in the Global Configurations page on the top right corner.

If you are using a .htaccess file, you can turn on the mod-rewrite option as well. The easiest way to use the .htaccess file is to rename the htaccess.txt file that is provided with the default Joomla installation.

Enable it by clicking on the On radio button and select all or whatever categories you want the url re-writing to be done as shown above.
In the Advanced tab, select the Rewriting mode for your site and save.

The component will ask if its ok to clear the cache. It will wipe out all the existing rewritten urls. Click on OK.

There you go, you can test your site with pretty urls now.

The best way to have all the urls re-written is to create a sitemap for the site and best way to do it is to go to http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/. You can create a sitemap for your site for up to 500 pages.

Alexa is an Amazon owned company that is famous for its public traffic ranking service via its alexa.com website. Website promotion guides often make a big deal about how to improve your Alexa ranking because a top position is often associated with high profits. As a new webmaster, you must understand a few very important points about Alexa's service. This article will explain what the data collected by Alexa mean and then describe why you should care or not.

There are three numbers that Alexa reports, reach, page views and overall rank. Reach refers to the percentage of all web users that visited your site. Alexa reports this number as "reach per million users." For example if Alexa reports a reach of one, it means that on average out of one million web surfers one visits your site. Page views simply measures the average number of pages a surfer examines when at your website. Those sites with a lot of content and targeted visitors tend to generate a larger number of page views. The overall Alexa rank is a combination of the reach and page views numbers such that the larger both of them are the lower the site's rank will be; for Alexa, a smaller rank indicates a more important website. Alexa reports these numbers for each day, one week and three month averages and the overall change over a three month period. So, how does Alexa gather these data?

On a daily basis, Alexa collects statistics about the number of visitors and page views for every website on the Internet. Actually, it does not have data for all the sites. You see, data collection happens via web surfers that have downloaded and installed the Alexa toolbar for their Internet Explorer browser. When one of these users visits and explores a site, the toolbar sends this information to Alexa's servers. What this means for webmasters is that only those sites visited by users that have decided to install the toolbar will actually have data collected for them. In addition, since only a rather small subset of all possible Web surfers actually uses the toolbar, the ranking is a statistical average that is not necessarily a true indication of the quality and number of a site's readers. In fact, the number is really inaccurate for sites with a small number of visitors and Alexa admits that this is true for those sites not in the top 100,000.

To make matters worse, the toolbar is only available for Internet Explorer. Of course, IE is the browser used by the majority of Internet users with data showing that it is used by about 83% of them (onestat.com). This is not a problem unless your audience is more likely to be in the other 17% of surfers, i.e., those that prefer to use Firefox, Safari, Opera or another alternative browser. For example, slashdot.org is a technology news site with an audience that is known to be very anti-Microsoft; Slashdot's motto is "News for nerds. Stuff that matters." One expects that most of its users would use any browser other than IE and in fact it was recently posted that an estimated 65% of Slashdot's readers use a browser other than IE. As of this writing (July 12, 2006), Slashdot's ranking was 176 with a reach of 5450 per million surfers. Slashdot is known for something called the "Slashdot effect" that is when a story on the front page links to a site, it receives so many visitors that the servers often are not able to handle the sudden increase in traffic. In other words, I would expect that Alexa's rank is actually an underestimate of Slashdot's true rank.

From a statistics point of view, Alexa's rank cannot be thought of as an unbiased statistical measure. The sample of people used by Alexa for collecting data is not a randomly selected set but rather it is biased towards users of Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer as well as those who are willing to install the toolbar and submit to Alexa information about their browsing behavior. If your audience is similar to Slashdot's then don't expect accurate results. Anticipate the same if your audience includes people who are pro-privacy and would never install a toolbar that calls home making their browsing behavior known to a large corporation.

So, if you really want accuracy in terms of your site's number of users and page views then you are better off using analytics software, for example Google Analytics, rather than Alexa. However, many advertisers use Alexa's ranking as a neutral third party estimate of a site's popularity; they consult Alexa in order to determine how much advertising space is worth on your site. This is the reason why many webmasters display their Alexa rank on the front page. If you happen to be on the upper end of Alexa's ranking then you should be able to benefit from it; if you are not then you probably shouldn't lose too much sleep over it. Once you create a website for your business, you quickly figure out that people are not flocking to it. Many small businesses make the mistake of designing their website and then start thinking about driving traffic to it. The problem is that the way you design your site can result in your site being ignored by the search engine spiders, which means you will receive very little traffic. When designing your site, ensure you avoid the following pitfalls and ask your marketing agency to confirm that they have been avoided.

Avoid flash sites

Sites are designed in HTML or flash codes. The spiders that are sent to your site by the search engines cannot read flash.

No frames

Some agencies design sites within frames. For example, the menu on the left might be within a frame and the main body of the page within another frame. Invest time in choosing the keywords. Think about how you would search for your product or service. If you are running a restaurant, you should immediately think beyond the generic search keyword of restaurant and consider descriptive keywords such as seafood restaurant or family restaurant. You also need to think of target keywords, so consider London restaurant or London seafood restaurant.

Once you have decided on your keywords, you need to place them throughout your site. The main areas are:

Web page title

This is what you see written in the title bar of the browser. It is also what you see when you bookmark a page. This should explain what the purpose of your site or your page is and include keywords, but always in such a way that makes sense to a user who reads it.

Meta tags

The tags are not visible to users but they explain what the content of the page is. Keywords should be placed in here as they are easily searchable by spiders.

Homepage content

Your homepage is searched by the spiders and you should ensure that your keywords appear near the top header. They should also be sprinkled throughout the homepage. See keyword density for guidance on this.

Keyword density

A question often asked is how many times your keywords should appear on a page. The guidance for SEO is that each page should have a minimum of 250 words; your keywords should account for 2 - 8% of the word on the page. That means they should appear between 4 and 16 times.

Two important points to bear in mind are:

1. You need to balance the need to write your copy for your users, in order to sell your product, and the need to write your copy for search engines, in order to be found.

2. To help you achieve both objectives you should focus on a couple of keywords for each page rather than a large number.

3. Links

Inbound links are key

To combat a lot of sites achieving high page ranking by simply stuffing their sites with keywords, the search engines have placed a higher weighting on the value of the number of sites which link into a site. The rationale is that if a site is linked to by lots of other sites, then it must be offering popular and relevant content.

Therefore, your site might be designed in a way that is easily searchable by spiders and your content might be sprinkled with keywords, but you need to have other sites linking to you in order to achieve success.

Audit your links

Ensure you know how many other websites are linking into your site and set a goal for increasing that figure. You should have at least 100 quality links.

Post comments on forums or discussion groups with a link back to our site.
